The FIFA World Cup is an iconic event that has become synonymous with high attendance and lots of fun. Since it’s inaugural tournament back in 1930, it has been hosted by only 32 different countries and each one has made at least one appearance in the competition.
But now, as we approach our next edition in 2030, there are some whispers surrounding the possibility of this most recent host nation to win the trophy not being given their due honour.
Some claim that the way that the Qatari government handled the aftermath of the deadly 2013 terrorist attack at the Manege Stadium was far more important than hosting the biggest sporting event in the world.
This includes allegedly giving jobs to relatives and friends who were involved in the attacks, while also funding services for survivors and the bereaved. It also means they didn’t contribute much money towards helping those affected recover from the tragedy either.
And all these things mean that the country isn’t quite ‘fit to host’ anymore, says some.
Qatari culture
As discussed earlier, FIFA has not announced the exact dates for when the next World Cup will be held yet. However, we do know that it is set to take place between June and July of 2022. Because this article’s title mentions the word ‘Qatar,’ there are two more important points to discuss here!
The first is what kind of culture does Qatar have? Does it have an established football culture or not? Some people say yes while others say no. This depends mostly on whether you are American or European. If you are European, then the answer is clearly yes! But if you are American, then probably no.
However, things are different in Asia. In fact, most countries in Southeast Asian actually have an established football culture. For example, the country of Indonesia even won the championship just last year! So although Europe may consider Japan and Korea as having a football culture, they definitely do not compare to some other parts of Asia.
In fact, many experts believe that Japan and South Korea could one day win their own world cup finals! That would make them qualified international teams like Spain, France, England, etc. Even though they aren't fully-fledged members of UEFA or CONMEBOL, they are still considered strong contenders.
Qualification phase
The next stage of qualification will see 32 teams face off against each other to determine who makes it through to the final tournament. There will be eight groups of four games in total. Each team will play every other team in their group once.
The winner of each group will advance to the quarter-finals as will the two best runners up. Then there will be three more rounds, or what is known as the knockout stage. This is when the competition really picks up pace.
It is called the semi-final round and will have sixteen matches! All winners from this stage go into the third and final round, which is the one-off final match.
This takes place at the Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro on December 6th 2021. If needed, there would then be a penalty shoot out to decide the champion.
Round of 16
The round of sixteen will be played as two games to determine who goes onto the next stage of the competition. One game will take place at either Melbourne’s AAMI Park or Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, while the other match will be held in Doha, Qatar.
The away goals rule will apply in this round with a 2-goal difference needed to decide the winner.
Round of 8
In this round, we will be choosing between Germany, Portugal, England, Italy, France, Uruguay, Mexico, or Colombia. All six teams are considered strong contenders to make it into the next round.
Germany is one of the most powerful European football nations with three UEFA championships under their belt. They’ve always been known for producing quality players and developing them.
Their success can mostly be attributed to their rich history as well as having large fan bases all around Europe and beyond. Many consider them to be legends of the game!
Portugal has won two major tournaments (Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup) just five years after being promoted from the qualifying rounds. This gives them huge prestige in world football.
England has only ever qualified once before for the tournament, but they have never left early. Even when they were knocked out at the group stage, they stayed until the end.
Italy has made it past the quarterfinals twice since 1998 and was arguably the best team in the competition each time. Their style of play is very offensive so they like to score lots of goals.
France has had many high points in international football including back-to-back wins over Spain in a famous Euro 2008 match and lifting the trophy themselves later that year.
Uruguay has consistently shown potential during recent cycles of qualification. They often do not win direct games, but they create chances enough to keep them going forward.
Round of 4
In this round we will be looking at which teams can make it into the final eight. These are very interesting games as they come down to who performs better under pressure. Almost every team has a clear game plan that they stick to throughout most parts of the match, but sometimes things just don’t go their way.
When this happens, some teams seem to lose motivation while others keep going even if they have been beaten. It is important for teams to show never give up hope and stay focused so that when you do win, you are able to enjoy your success more fully.
Some players also use the media or talk with friends after the match to get extra inspiration or motivation for next time. For example, how many sports leagues hold a press conference immediately following the game? This is not always done in football but it should be!
If there is one thing that we have learned about Qatar, it is that they like to promote a positive environment where people feel comfortable talking to each other.
Bronze medal match
On June 18th of this year, we saw one of the greatest showings at an international level for any sporting event. Brazil faced Germany in what is referred to as the bronze medal game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup!
This was not your normal friendly football match either. This was an intense clash between two top teams that wanted it very much.
The atmosphere was electric before, during, and after the match. The stadium was packed with people who had gathered from all over the world to watch the game.
It’ll be hard to forget those incredible scenes when you look around the stands and see just how many fans there are. It was truly amazing to witness.
Brazil won 2-0 and took home their second straight gold medal, but the crowd left behind will always remember the intensity of that match.
Gold medal match
On July 13, 2018, the final of this tournament will be played at the Al Wakrah Sports City Stadium in Doha, Qatar. This event is very special as it will be hosted by one of the wealthiest countries in the world-Qatar!
The gold medal game will feature two teams that have made it to the finals. They will both play for the championship title and a chance to win their country’s biggest honour–the FIFA Club World Cup.
